SOPHOCLES’ ELECTRA, THE LAST BLOOD | 13 – 16.07.2015
Theatro Technis Karolos Koun, Frynichou
Athens and Epidaurus Festival
Agamemnon kills a deer and a daughter. Clytemnestra murders him in the bath upon his return. Aegisthus spreads fear and imposes confinement. Chrysothemis learns how to survive. Electra never learns. Orestes, exiled for years, returns to turn words into action. Everyone and everything moves between whispers and silences.
In the still waters of a sea that has become a lake, rises the monument of a prosperity that has reached its end. The House of Atreus, possessed for years by the murderous obsession of its ancestral Curse, seeks the restoration of ancient sins. The act of remembrance awakens the heroes of the present and the past in a story where each becomes the Fury of the other.
Power is exercised and withdrawn upon a table and a bed—places where humans eat and bring other humans into the world. The circle of blood closes in the same way it opened: through deceit. The once-defeated become the next victors, weary and powerless from waiting for a catharsis that never arrives.
Was it meant to be this way?
It was meant to be this way.
