INSOMNIA GRECA, PART I | THE NATIVITAS INSOMNIA | THE VIGIL OF THE NATIVITY
[CELEBRATING THE BIRTH OF A REFUGEE GOD] | 24.12.2015
MUNICIPAL THEATRE OF PIRAEUS
“Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: ‘Rise, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt… for Herod is seeking the child to destroy him.’
He rose, took the child and his mother by night, and departed for Egypt.”
Gospel of Matthew, ch. 2, 13–14
INSOMNIA GRECA is a trilogy of late-night performances and installations presented at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus in 2015–2016, during three key moments of Greek folk tradition: Christmas Eve, Carnival Sunday, and Holy Thursday.
The audience could enter the theatre at any time between 24:00–03:00. Holding a map showing where installations or performances were located, each visitor could choose where to go and in what order.
Between 03:00–04:00, audience, performers, and contributors shared food traditionally cooked for each respective moment in time.
The central axis of the Trilogy was “The Stranger.”
Part I took place at midnight of December 23rd–24th, 2015, in collaboration with the Migrant Women’s Network of Greece “MELISSA.”
What does it mean to be a stranger?
How permanent are the roles of “Host” and “Guest”?
How easily can these roles change hands?
