BLOOD WEDDING, AN EXISTENTIAL TRAGEDY | 2017
Apo Michanis Theatre, Athens
A dramatic love story or a tragedy?
The preparation for a wedding, two people who run away destroying the honor of their families, and a double death form the axis of Blood Wedding. Within this framework, Lorca paints—through his poetic language—a surreal canvas using the palette of his Land and his World. Humans chase the Sun, and the Moon chases humans. The poet himself characterized this particular work as a tragedy.
The play is approached through the fissure created in human existence by fear and desire, justice and injustice, death and love. In other words, through the essence of the eternal tragedy of humanity in the face of decay and its own nature.
Blood Wedding was written in 1932 and is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of modern literature. It premiered in Madrid in March 1933. In Greece, it was first performed in April 1948.
The performance was staged under the auspices of the Department of Spanish Language and Literature of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with the support of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Performing Architectures.
